A compliant umbrella payroll Company offers contractors/temporary workers the ability to be employed in order to help them fulfil and invoice for short to medium term contracts with multiple agencies/clients.
In order to help a contractor to fulfil their contract, an Umbrella Company will engage with their agency or end client.
When the contractor notifies the Umbrella Company of the time spent on the contract (weekly or monthly depending upon their contracted terms) the Umbrella Company will raise an invoice to the agency or client for the value of the work carried out at the rate agreed.
Once funds are received for the work invoices by the umbrella company, the Umbrella Company will calculate and pay the correct income tax and National Insurance contributions to HMRC, passing the remainder to the contractor less any costs.
Although contractors may consider themselves to be self-employed, when working through an Umbrella Company (assuming they don’t have any other forms of income) they are in fact employees of the Umbrella company in order to be paid through their PAYE payroll.
Umbrella Companies take a fee in exchange for providing contractors with these employment services. This fee is deducted from the gross billed amount prior to processing of payroll.
Working through a compliant umbrella payroll company is the main option taken by tens of thousands of contractors in the UK every year.
Working through an umbrella company is an easy, hassle-free way to work.
Umbrella companies together with the recruiting agency ensure your IR35 status and working are inline with legislation, work out and deduct tax and National Insurance contributions and offer you all of the usual statutory rights an employee receives.
When using an umbrella company you afford yourself the freedom and flexibility to choose the contracts you work on and when. Even allowing you to work with multiple agencies or end clients while maintaining just one employment contract with the umbrella company.
With increasing numbers of contractors taking this route, more and more umbrella companies have been established (supply and demand).
With so many options available it can be difficult to decide on the right Umbrella Company to use and with so many agencies having their own idea as to which umbrella companies should be used it’s never been more difficult to not only find the right umbrella company for you but also one that your agency will be happy for you to use.
